The Kurdish journalist says he will ask New Zealand's Government to negotiate the release of detainees caught up in Australia's offshore processing system.

Mr Boochani was met by a crowd at the Christchurch airport, receiving a traditional welcome by the local Maori Iwi, or tribe, Ngai Tahu.

Speaking to RN's Geraldine Doogue from Christchurch, Mr Boochani said he had a"great opportunity" to raise the issue of detainees being held in PNG."I really would like to ask the New Zealand Government to have a negotiation with PNG and Nauru directly," he said.

When asked whether he intended to claim asylum in New Zealand, Mr Boochani said he was considering extending his visa."I want to be free for a while.Mr Boochani has recently been accepted for resettlement in the US and previously said he was investigating whether he could fly from New Zealand to the US, once the process was completed.

He was given temporary travel documents and permission from the PNG Immigration Department to travel to New Zealand. Before he left, he told the ABC he did not intend to return to PNG. Not big on doing the right thing it seems. 🙄

Great. He can stay there, live a peaceful life and we don’t have to hear about him ever again.

Such wokeness 🤢, i'm sure he will now send all that money made from his book sales to help the folks left at Manus 😪
