A Liberal party insider who has a close understanding of NSW seats, but who cannot speak publicly under party rules, said the state was critical to victory. “The problem the Liberals face is that they have to hold every seat in NSW but also pick up one from Labor.” Despite the focus on NSW, the state division of the Liberal Party only finalised candidates in the days before the election was called.
