The Albanese government is leaning into an ACTU-Business Council of Australia deal that would introduce a new wages safeguard in return for simplifying and speeding up the enterprise bargaining system.
Australian Council of Trade Unions secretary Sally McManus outlined the measure – first flagged at this month’s– as a way to simplify parts of the BOOT that were “too technical and time-consuming”. “The commission would be able to fix it, be able to order that they get paid what they should be paid so they’re not worse off,” she said.Ms McManus said this would prevent the commission from “overturn[ing] the whole agreement because the big problem was that agreements had been held up and then they have been overturned over a small group of workers who were worse off”.
