Former US president Barack Obama has penned a lengthy essay urging his country to 'get to work' to enact criminal justice reform and address systemic racism after a weekend of protests over the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police.

Mr Obama - who previously spoke out against Mr Floyd's death, saying treating US citizens differently on the account of race"shouldn't be 'normal' in 2020" - also condemned the violence that has accompanied some of the protests."If we want our criminal justice system, and American society at large, to operate on a higher ethical code, then we have to model that code ourselves.

"The bottom line is this: if we want to bring about real change, then the choice isn't between protest and politics. We have to do both. We have to mobilise to raise awareness, and we have to organise and cast our ballots to make sure that we elect candidates who will act on reform," he wrote. He also emphasised the importance, not just of national elections, but those at the state and local level, where he says reforming police departments and the criminal justice system is most integral.

Exactly, the protestors should not get too 'revolutionary'. Democracy has enough provision for protest and change. Let's see where these violent protestors are when it's time to cast their vote for the next president!

Ahhhh, all if a sudden he has ideas, why didn't he do these things when he was President 😱😱😱

Craig_Foster My question though...Why didn't Obama do this when he was president?

The silent war monger! He killed and displaced so so many people

Obama is the American Malcolm Turnbull.. he could of done something while he was in power but didn't , but yet he's constantly sniping .

Trump introduced the 'first step act'. Silence from SBS

BREAKING : Dad heads home after receiving text from kids - Please come home. The babysitter is definitely unhinged. We’ve locked him in the spare room with his phone, but we’re running out of Diet Coke and ideas.

Craig_Foster He could have done it, but it’s easier to ride on anti-Trump sentiment I guess.

He needs to stay the fuck out of this. Let’s not forget he had his opportunity to reform lots of stuff.

Best American president ever😊

8 Years did shit all. Writes essays now.

Why didn't he do any of that when he was president for two full terms. He seems pretty quick to judge trump who's not served one term.

This man put more Black Americans in jail than any other President...Good one SBS
