Greens Leader Adam Bandt says his lawyers have written to Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus accusing him of defamation after the senior minister told ABC’s Afternoon Briefing that the Greens’ had been encouraging criminal damage to electorate offices.
“I think that the first law officer of this country should not make utterly unfounded statements and spread disinformation. No politician should do that. “I think that the Greens political party and particularly the leader of the Greens political party have got something to answer for here in the way that they have been encouraging criminal damage of MPs electorate offices, encouraging really riotous behaviour, sometimes violent behaviour, that has been occurring outside electorate offices,” Dreyfus said on Wednesday.Dreyfus was contacted for comment.
The debate was sparked when Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told question time the Greens should not make any remarks that encouraged protests that shut down electorate offices because it was anti-democratic when it stopped the work of elected MPs and their staff.“Enough is enough. The time for senators and members of parliament to continue to inflame tensions outside these offices must end,” he said.
