There is a heightened awareness of personal safety following the high-profile deaths of three local women, support services say.

Ballarat services supporting women experiencing family violence say there's been a surge in calls after the high-profile deaths of three women. The city council has received a $250,000 grant to help combat family violence in the city.

On February 4, Samantha Murphy, 51, disappeared after going for a run. A 22-year-old local man has been charged with her murder. The uptick in requests for support included secondary consults, such as other organisations calling WRISC with concerns that a client was a victim-survivor or experiencing family violence."There is a heightened awareness of peoples' safety and making sure they are taking steps to feel as safe as they can," Ms Jewson said.

Ballarat will receive a $250,000 grant for implementing initiatives to combat family violence and violence against women. "This is a critical issue for Ballarat ... we need to be proactive and on the front foot in terms of delivering strategies to reduce that."
