Police officers are using paid parking spots, loading zones and car-share spaces in one of the city's busiest neighbourhoods rather than their own dedicated parking

City of Sydney councillor Kerryn Phelps is spearheading an effort to stop the police taking too many parking spaces in one of the city's busiest suburbs.

Dr Phelps, whose nearby medical practice on Bourke St is affected by the police presence, is calling for a "comprehensive study" of parking in Surry Hills, including community consultation. She intends to ask questions about the issue at the next city council meeting on June 24.

"Councillor Phelps seems to misunderstand the facts, claiming that residential parking was lost and that consultation did not occur," a spokesperson for lord mayor Clover Moore said. "This is simply not the case."Long-time Goulburn Street resident Nick Smith, who moved out of the area just last month, said it seemed like locals received a letter from council every year saying that the local police station was reserving more of the limited on-street parking.

Mr Gyory also complained of new parking meters being put outside his business, which he said discouraged business. "We weren't notified about the new meters," he said. "When I pulled the council up on it, they said they sent the notification to the ratepayers, not to the businesses."Parking in Surry Hills costs between $3.90 and $7.20 an hour, depending on the time of day.

Muppet news

Who cares

Another slow news day?

What Kerryn Phelps has gone from saving the planet to parking mistress! Surely the work experience kid who wrote this can try something a little less complicated than parking. Better still Kerryn, just add a sign to the areas in question, ‘Police vehicles accepted.’

Good to see the acquisition by Nine hasn't affected the standard of journalism at the SMH

Remember this, any time anyone complains about a police car parking illegally, will be the same time they call the police for assistance and cry because they took ages to arrive, due to not be able to park anywhere other than designated areas.

That’s tezzibles!

OMG! 😱

Are wind farms the 'Formula One cars' of our future power systems?Multi-million dollar wind farms are springing to life in Tasmania, and there are billions of dollars more in the pipeline. How will that affect the state's - or Australia's - energy security? No. No, but hedges are definitely the 'knives and forks' of fences. In the medium to long term there will only be one energy system that will dominate, compact aneutronic fusion reactors. They will produce power at 10% the cost of any other solution with units as small as a house producing 500 megawatts 24/7 from tiny amounts of cheap fuel.🤓⚛️
