The plan has already been criticised by animal rights groups for being too slow to end the use of cages, while the industry wanted a longer phase-out lasting until 2046
The federal government has been forced to table proposed new standards for poultry welfare in parliament. Internationally, Australia has been an outlier on chicken welfare, with 30 of the 36 nations of the OECD either having phased out battery cages or in the process of getting rid of them. The RSPCA would like to see the phase-out of existing cages, which would have been installed in about 2008, happen faster.
Phase them out and up the price. Caging chickens is cruel.
Humane treatment does not equal price, quality, and cost effectiveness (?). This is a livestock E= MC squared. The spin might be, you get what you pay for. The stockmen that are Humane, are also.. meaning, do you really want that, just because it is cheaper.. and that is a maybe.
Hey What’s with the fkn headline! Egg and bacon rolls will be more expensive if eggs cost more. The entire article is about improved animal welfare ffs
Ludicrous headline. You left out quiche.
In 2036?
Its a win win, I lose some pounds and the chickens get their freedom back. I'm ok with that!
What a stupid headline.
How are battery hens still a thing, what century is it ? Who is buying these eggs ? Isn’t stuffing chooks together in small cages for their lifetime a cruel and unusual practice.
That's good
WHO comes up with these brain dead ideas? We are cutting off our nose to spite our face, everywhere. No eggs. Add that to rolling blackouts, because we will not be able to provide electricity for extreme events. Plus water issues (no new dams). Plus pollution (backburner issue).
Pastry? How many pastry recipes have eggs?
Make pastries smaller & throw out less. We eat too much and waste too much
Ok.
The ABC has lost the plot, caged eggs are fasing out because people are buying Free Range
Fine by me! Housing hens in cages is absolutely reprehensible!!!
The price of humanity. Hope all the cluckers eventually get to be free range - not just kept cooped up in a barn. Baby steps but heading the right way.
It took a few seconds 🤣😂🤣😂
But what eggs will all the scumbags buy now?
This is so Australian. Ppl want things to be “right”.....they just don’t want to pay for it. The mind boggles.
What a negative way to report this good news story
What has bacon got to do with caged eggs? Chickens don’t lay bacon.
By 2036. I would have enough Egg and Bacon rolls by then.
So be it! Animal cruelty not justified under any circumstances. Animal cruelty in mass numbers for financial gain abhorrent and unconscionable. Criminal, really.
About bloody time
Customers pay for every changes made by businesses. Business simply pass the cost to customers. Every business must disclose how much govt funds/grants/Tax benefits they are getting every financial year.
can you imagine having free range chooks in Singapore or HK or Lagos with 15mils Just a farce
What BS scare tactics, coles and woolies destroyed the system for monopoly control and the political puppets let it happen
Stop buying caged eggs, see how long they will last.
I'd pay a premium
Eggselent , the chickens will come home to roost with this one. Cracks me up why it took took so long. Only yolking.
just stupidity Why do we need to free range eggs? just costing more to please animals lobby What about pork?
I'm happy to pay a bit more and stop the suffering of the chooks.
I'd be willing to take that hit.
Good.
Well done to all you art degree chicken experts. Yep the best is the one about free range eggs they all should be. I think it would be hard to feed the 10 million per week on free range but I’m not an art student so I know nothing
The only thing that needs to be phased out is the ABC they talk to much shit
I can’t believe it’s still legal
2036? Incredible they would wait that long. Today's three-year-olds will be sinking a few beers to celebrate that initiative.
And so they should. Australia should be encouraged to have free range of all products including organic fruits and vegetables and not have food tampered with by using unnecessary preservatives. We live in a synthetic world and that should change.
Good idea.
good
Good. Then they can move on to the bacon and look at the pork industry. Industrialised farming = cruelty.
Excellent really good idea
It's the right thing to do
Should be banned NOW!
I'm ok with that.
This was your title choice?

China's anti-crypto move sends markets tumblingA power play from China&x27;s central bank has rattled the cryptocurrency world, sending the price of Bitcoin, Ethereum and Dogecoin crashing. When enough money is lost, these companies and greedy idiots who still think the Chinese gov is worth investing in, will learn that China wasn’t worth it in ancient times and it’s not worth it in modern times. In the end you will lose. Take your money home. You mean that pretend play money that they use in that game 'Your Stupid to think your going to get rich'? If you buy shares in cryptocurrency you really should be worried. Elon Musk recently proved this by first making a positive announcement and then hardly a few months later backtracking on his promises. He made a lot of money out of that stunt. A lot of other people lost! Bitcoin?
