Research finds back-seat drivers can help reduce accidents. But it all depends on how the advice is given

As Sue Bull commutes from Mt Colah to Hornsby in Sydney, she often hears a male voice reminding her to slow down. It is her husband Richard, a back-seat driver and frequent passenger, repeating "60 kilometres" as she slows from an 80km/h zone.

The co-author of the research, Samuel Charlton, a professor of psychology at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, said the difference between good and bad help is "when we are talking about the situation versus the person". Previous studies on back-seat drivers focused on the belief that passengers were a distraction, say Professor Charlton and co-author Professor Nicola Starkey in. This stereotype comes from film and television's "caricatures of overly talkative passengers and back-seat drivers”.

NSW faces an anxious wait as Melbourne forced back into COVID lockdownExperts believe Australia has entered a dangerous new phase of the pandemic as soaring infection numbers in Melbourne forced the city back into lockdown and put NSW on high alert for new COVID-19 clusters. Would be so much easier if we closed international borders and grounded every fkin plane. We are relying on hotel quarantine which is clearly not watertight. It’s a joke. Good luck reopening the economy with this kind of sh** show. Most of Spread of covid 19 come from people coming back from overseas.... People coming back should be asked to sign to accept mandatory testing and pay for their own cost of quarantine, no test no going home ... Little Shanghai

Centrelink accidentally pays man $6000 then refuses to take it backHaving thousands of dollars unexpectedly land in your bank account might seem like good news...but not in this case. Incompetence. If he has to claim it as his income I say he should be able to spend it. It’s not his fault. Govt need to be held accountable here. If I accidentally put money in the wrong account (get a digit wrong) that’s on me. I lose the money & still need to put the money in the right account. So why do banks & government have a special rule for them?

Melbourne forced back into lockdown in $6b blow to economy | Sky News AustraliaVictoria's coronavirus outbreak has forced Melbourne and the Mitchell shire back into lockdown from midnight tonight. \n\nAs the rest of Australia opens, Melbourne residents will be under stay-at-home orders for the next six weeks, in a blow which is expected to put a $6 billion hole in the state economy. \n\nThe stay-at-home order was put in place on Tuesday after 191 new COVID-19 cases were recorded in the state. \n\nPremier Daniel Andrews said the state was forced into lockdown due to Victorians’ complacency. \n\n“I’m not here to criticise Victorians, I’m not here to be lecturing Victorians, but I’ve got to call it out, and I think every Victorian knows at least one other person who perhaps hasn’t been following the rules as much as they should have,” he said. \n\nVictorian businesses are being offered some much-needed relief, as banks extend loan repayments to businesses still struggling with financial hardship due to the virus. \n\nThe federal government has also made emergency changes to childcare funding, to support Victorian families impacted by the new lockdown orders. \n 191 cases. 🙄🙄🤨🤨🤨 Yeah, but at least they declared a climate emergency.
