Health authorities will review the circumstances surrounding four baby deaths in the past month at Adelaide's Women's and Children's Hospital, after a parliamentary committee heard a lack of services was to blame.

Health authorities have launched a review into a "cluster" of baby deaths at Adelaide's Women's and Children's Hospital after a parliamentary committee heard a lack of infant heart and life support services was to blame.

Dr Cusack said between six and 10 babies with significant heart abnormalities were usually born in SA each year, and that the deaths needed to be investigated. "Had we provided the very best available care for those children and their families? And what are the lessons learnt?" Labor spokesperson Chris Picton said a business case, prepared by doctors last year, also claimed the lack of cardiac surgery had contributed to at least one avoidable death and several near misses at the time.

The document warns of "avoidable mortality" as a result of the lack of an ECMO machine service there, and that "at least one avoidable death has occurred".

Meanwhile SkyNewsAust have somehow managed to blame this on DanielAndrewsMP and Victoria. Appalling. I hope SA get the facilities and doctors they clearly need to stop more preventable deaths.

Because of the 'incompetence in Victoria, four babies have died': Paul Murray | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Paul Murray says the 'failures of South Australian government' and the 'incompetence of the Victorian government' has meant four babies have died.\n\n“Currently, if you have a baby that is born in this hospital in Adelaide and it has a problem with their heart, they can’t do anything for you,” Mr Murray said.\n\n“So you have to get sent to Sydney or you have to get sent to Melbourne.”\n\nMr Murray said, due to the lockdowns in Melbourne, and the fact Sydney’s hospitals are under too much pressure looking after a majority of cases of children’s heart diseases, babies born in Adelaide with heart trouble have not been seen to, and as a result, “four babies have died”.\n\n“Four babies have died in the past month … because the women and children’s hospital in Adelaide does not have a cardiac unit.\n\n“This is something that, in a first class country like Australia, that the leading children’s hospital in a major state does not have this facility, is outrageous.\n\n“Think about the failure of the South Australian government to provide this facility, then think about the incompetence of the Victorian government that led to them not being able to use a facility that would have saved these children’s lives.”\n Absolute tragedy!!!!! 😔🙏 So bloody wrong. 🙏

Andrews deflects responsibility over the death of four SA babies | Sky News AustraliaPremier Andrews has deflected claims Victoria’s COVID-19 restrictions caused the death of four babies born in South Australia who required heart surgery and would normally have been sent to Melbourne’s Royal Children’s hospital. \n\n“I don't think it is a matter of restrictions,” he said, arguing “there was a choice not at our end, but the other end for them not to be sent”.\n\n“I can only go with what I'm been told. I don't think it was a you can't come here type of deal”.\n\nThe premier went on and touted the quality of care received at the Royal Children’s Hospital saying, “we don't just do the best work in Australia, we do some of the best in the world”.\n\n“The reason we have a deep personal connection to the Royal Children's Hospital is many of us as parents has seen our kids get care there, and we are confident that they don't just provide run-of-the-mill care,' he said. \n Perhaps if the SA government had invested in a cardiac unit & doctors in the hospital, as requested repeatedly by the hospital, doctors & nurses, these preventable deaths wouldn’t have occurred? Way to spin the story Sky. This is on the LNP, nothing to do with DanielAndrewsMP How I wish I was faultless at this man thinks he is oh to be this perfect has he ever made a mistake SA is the only Aus state without paediatric cardiac facilities - THAT is a failure of the current & previous SA governments. This is the issue. Also, why aren’t you having a crack at NSW, where Westmead only chooses patients on a “case by case” basis?
