The escaped baboons have prompted a conversation on the use of animals in medical research with concerns raised on opposite ends of the political spectrum.

A National Health and Medical Research Council spokesperson told the Feed that animal rights activists take the position that no animal should be used for research without “viable alternatives”.

“There also seems to be an overstating of the option to use alternatives to the use of animals in research. For example, a recent Senate inquiry committee report in Australia noted that the development of viable alternatives to the use of non-human primates in some research has yet to reach a stage whereThe baboons are understood to be part of a colony overseen by the Sydney Local Health District.

Can we use SBS and ABC workers for all future lab testing?

Testing animals are no different than cattle or chicken. They are bred for a purpose that is to develop techniques than eventually save human lives.

No it hasn’t....

Where's the conversation on halal slaughter

God we live in a twee little world now. animal experimentation on monkeys including Rhesis and baboons has been going on since the 60's or even further back. How do you think Australia led the world in kidney transplants? It's sad watching the animals deteriorate until the end.

The Chinese have announced to test vaccines etc on typical patients..eg,coronavirus cures on people just like one would expect!

That's what they were escaping from❗ Animal testing is abhorrent. No wonder they tried to run, poor babies. What a horrible world we inflict on animals.

Could always do testing on all the politicians, they are all oxygen thieves

Poor beasties. Cruel

Yes. Well. SBS news. We better hope that these three Baboons were not injected with some kind of virus and allowed to escape. Did anyone think about this?

seems like a normal day in the city.

um they are using ferrets for the corona virus testing because they have a similar lung function/structure

You’d rather we test on humans?

Well I'd rather have a corona virus vaccine, because they have animals to test it in, rather than no vaccine. I mean this is the tenet of socialism really, were all in this together sacrifice a few for the good of the many or wait is that communism?

I thought this was an Onion article until I realised that the baboons themselves weren't the ones leading the discussions.
