REVIEW (spoiler alert): If they gave out Oscars for ambition alone, James Cameron’s rivals might not bother showing up.

If they gave out Oscars for ambition alone, James Cameron’s rivals might not bother showing up. His original 2009, a 3D action epic about 10-foot blue-skinned aliens, remains by some measures the most successful movie ever made; 13 years on,Neytiri and Jake Sully in Avatar: The Way of Water.packs in every kind of popular appeal it can.

At the same time, Cameron is so steeped in the grammar of Hollywood storytelling there’s hardly a plot move inthat doesn’t feel familiar. Beneath its science fiction trappings, this is basically a romantic adventure story about a coloniser who “goes native”, a tradition that long predates the invention of cinema.

After the skirmishes that occupy the film’s first act, Jake, his wife Neytiri and their children are forced to flee, taking refuge with a sea-dwelling clan known as the Metkayina . Quaritch sets out to hunt them down, but meanwhile there’s time for them to adjust to their new life – and for Cameron to indulge his long-held love of the marine environment.

After 13 years, the Avatar sequel is finally hitting cinemas. Here's what you need to knowDirector James Cameron is about to release the sequel to his blockbuster Avatar — and he says it will need to be 'the third or fourth-highest-grossing film in history' to even break even. 'It's still a cartoon for kids, with very average CGI, and a plot stolen from better stories. Also the acting, my God, how is the acting so bad!' That it is overrated, over priced and a load of cgi tripe? That it’s been too DAHM long for a sequel? 😳
