Surveys show Australians want to buy electric vehicles , but they continue to languish at less than 1 per cent of new car sales. What's going on?Australia's rate of EV car sales is rapidly falling behind that of other developed countriesManufacturers say they're not shipping EVs to Australia due to government policy

Volkswagen, which is on track to become the world's largest EV maker, sold 212,000 EVs worldwide in 2020.The top-selling electric car in Europe in 2020, the Volkswagen ID.3, won't be launched in Australia until at least 2023, its maker says.Car makers have begun skipping Australia when releasing their latest models and some are publicly saying the country is becoming a "Third World dumping ground" for outdated petrol-engine technology.

Almost twice as many hybrids were sold in 2020 as in the previous year — a growth in sales Australian Automotive Dealers Association chief executive officer James Voortman described as "insane".But in other markets hybrids have been selling wellWhat makes the situation even more puzzling is that Australia has the highest per-capita uptake of rooftop solar in the world.

Australia is very backward when recognizing that the world changed a decade ago. The fourth industrial revolution....electricity. Australia used to build cars.....right?

I'd love nothing more than to buy an EV...you know what's stopping me, $$. Until this government makes such a purchase financially viable, nothing will change 🤬

Is it the fact that they have a 200km range and take 10 hours to recharge? Just a hunch..

Fuel companies don’t want that shit they loose money

Growth will be driven by fleet buyers. EV fleets are ESG low hanging fruit. Progress here will ultimately be driven by global attitudes - domestic policy, languishes behind.

I DO NOT WANT AN ELECTRIC CAR.

Wolfie_Rankin practically half of the emissions from cars come from making the damn things. give us more public transport.

Here is why, the infrastructure to support these vehicles on the road in virtually non existent. Emergency workers need to be trained on how to handle these vehicle in a accident situation. Waste disposal of the batteries ? The price and the tax needs to come down.

bkbaguley This LNP Govt sickens me with its shameless FF mates’ enabling. Yep, we’re a dumping ground, literally. A convenient flick off for the big makers; who must be laughing at us from their boardrooms.

WE LIVE ON THE WORLD’S BIGGEST ISLAND! No one wants your electric cars here. 🙄

Hugo tax break must be imposed. In the article, even a $10k tax break is applied, Hyundai EV is still 20% more than petrol. I’m not buying Chinese MG-brand EV.

Imagine living on a country that can actually build cars! Electric, hybrid whatever

Probably has something to do with the guy who runs the show Mr Ves Tesdintrest....🤣

Thy name is Morrison.

VW have every right to preach at a nation on the other side of the planet with challenges they don’t understand. Does the V in VW stand for virtuous? And on top of that, they’d like the taxpayer to subsidize them and their opaque & over priced operations here?

Quit the bullshit pushing left wing propaganda at taxpayers expense. Uphold your charter or become a subscription network!

Money

The Morrison Government.

we also want to buy fcev

Build 20 coal fired power station immediately. Clean coal, brilliant.

That something is Government policy.

Yeah that is they look like shit they sound like shit, you can’t get anywhere in a hurry and if the battery runs out it costs thousands to get the thing home , oh and when you give up on the car some years later Miss Thunberg and governments will charge you thousands to dispose.

What happens to the massive battery bank per car once they need replacing They will be the new environmental issue.

'We are a Third World dumping ground in terms of automotive technology.'

Cos they are fucking expensive!

I got 1 it mostly feeds off the Solar Battery over night.... I don't see 7 Cents/Kwh for uploading to the grid as great so I charge my car with it.

Common sense

Nuclear power … massive grid infrastructure investment will be needed

I think I know what it is MurdochsLNP

Well paid jobs?

One thing stopping us - Liberal National Party Australia aka LNPCorruptionParty 1. Supporting FossilFuels until we all die 2. Destroyed car manufacturing 3. Avoiding egg on faces for mocking Shorten & claiming EVs would wreck weekends & utes. LNPfail ClimateAction auspol

LNP, IPA and Newscorp ... even tho they're all technically one and the same.

In terms of dollar-bucks EVs are not currently competitive with ICEs. Give me a price-competitive EV large family sedan and I’ll happily buy one when my Ford Falcon goes out to pasture.

Yeah the LNP

This?

Aversion is two fold, finding the culprit is based on a 'chicken & egg theory'. 1) Government 2) People Both EQUALY guilty as current government was voted in by people ALTHOUGH everybody KNEW ScottyTheGaslighter's aversion of EV's in favor of Coal. It's simple, it's greed.

. Does anyone believe this BS? Aus pays more for the same vehicles than other countries. Aus has higher disposable income. But international businesses don't want our money As if.

Yeah. Charging stations

The reason why people aren't buying electric cars is because they cost way too much. The sweet spot for most people for a brand new car costs between $20,000 up to $30,000, that's where the mass market is for cars.

Too expensive. Petrol or diesel much much cheaper for most Australians. Perhaps a locally developed electric car manufacturer would help, but who has the entrepreneurial capacity to do it?

No they don’t!

Name them

JamesPurtill Problem goes deeper than just supply of EVs. If recharging is done from grid CO2 emissions will be according to the NEM energy mix, mainly coal, especially at night. You need roof areas sufficiently large to install additional PV panels plus batteries. Winter less

Lol luxury car tax... To protect an automotive industry we don't even have... Who is going to pay that dumb tax I wonder?!?!?

Yes there is something stopping us;... Murdoch Media, LNP & the braindead Tardmuppets that voted for them.!

So I can tie my boat up through Adelaide Hills to the river no problemo ?. They should be adding the tech to diesels not lawnmower size petrol engines.

Aussies are buying EVs. 4 types of EV: Plug-in battery (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PEV) fuel cell hydrogen (FCEV) & hybrid (HEV). The article only addresses BEV as 60k HEV were sold in 2020. Agree more has to be done for all EV types but to say Aussies aren’t buying EV isn’t true!

What bunk waiting for government policy, build or import the right EV product at the right price and demand pull will lead they way ? Better to get the electricity grid on renewables ready ?

It's ok. Long after the rest of the world has converted to EVs, there will be a factory, somewhere, making ICE cars and a petrol refinery operating, just for the .3% of the market Australia represents...../s

Well I can't afford a new car... Of any kind.

Surely we are at the front of the queue for electric cars? No?

Why are you pushing corporate welfare as a means to drive sales? Spending the tax if your local Macca's employee on $billion businesses is BS.

Then they don't really need one.

Further down Angus Taylor’s spokesperson attacks VW when all the manufacturers are saying the same... Fantastic. great move. well done Angus 🙄

Yeah.......the price.

1. A bit rich for VW to complain about our environmental standards, given their recent gigantic fine. 2. EVs are currently not profitable without government incentives. The question is whether government should subsidise auto companies to get EVs on roads. ... /1

what's gong on? The price. Electric cars are needed primarily to get workers to work. Cheap electric city cars sell for between $10,000 and $15,000 and are more than good enough for the daily commute. Labour and Liberal refused to allow them to be brought into the country.
