The 2021 Lowy Institute Poll has found more Australians now see China as a security threat rather than an economic partner, and the majority blame China for tensions in the relationship between the countries.

"Almost all Australians agree the US has not handled the pandemic well and I think that continues to inform their views."Of those surveyed, 78 per cent said the alliance was important to the country's security, while 76 per cent said the two countries shared common values.

Only 36 per cent of those surveyed said the alliance was decreasing in importance because the US was in relative decline when compared to China. That was a 10 point drop from 2019. Ms Kassam said there had been a clear shift since 2016, when the Lowy Institute poll found respondents were uncertain whether the country's future lay with the US or China.

"That's certainly not the case today, with sentiment souring to China and [at] the moment warming to the United States. It does feel like Australia is perhaps having to pick a side, and the public recognises that."

It is a pointless question; both are totally untrustworthy.

My condolences to abc

Intelligence says Enemy .

Australia’s lack of trust towards China is a direct consequence of the concentrated campaign of misinformation by this government….

It's a bit like asking would you prefer to be suffering from Ebola or Bubonic plague

who doesn't like the Panda 🤣

WOW 2,200 people surveyed from a population of what 25 million. And how many were handed out to colleagues and co-colleagues and alike. Not much credibility in that. And by the comments posted, not much interest in the findings coz nothing surprising or worthy of reading.

I don't trust china OR north Korea, the hell are you talking about ABC

The Tarim Basin is the largest oil & gas field in China located in Xian province where Uyghurs live. USA generated wars with Iran & Iraq over oil & gas interests, why not China?

Next survey question should be…who do you trust more, Xi or Morrison? This will be interesting

The Australian media has pursued the government agenda of slagging china at every given opportunity. It’s almost as if Australian journalists sit by their computers waiting for a departmental media brief to be emailed out so they can rehash it into an article

Who actually does these surveys? Never met anyone who has

Surprising result for me. At least Kim is straight up a bad person that we can trust to be bad and doesn't try to hide it through manipulation and politics.

The truth is we don't trust any of them. We also fail to trust those who have immigrated from such countries as we face the issue of foreign interference and the fact our country can be sold.

They are basically the same deal. The PRC and the DPRK fought together in the Korean War. The regimes are closely allied and whilst the PRC is slightly more liberal, it isn't much better

What a high bar to set.

Atleast the Chinese citizens are allowed in and out of their country, unlike North korea and Australia.

Chinese media are talking about how their spaceship got onto Mars and our media just keeps whining about all these useless things

guess the survey was done within ABC

This survey was of the ABC’s own staff which explains why a lot of people aren’t convinced the ABC is on Australia’s side.

But do they trust both more than Morrison?

Didn't ask me or anyone I know of

I think it would be better to let President Xi rule Australia .

Omg who cares?!

You don’t speak for Australians - the ABC is full of 💩 journos recycling second hand news.

Honestly, none of them care if Australians trust them or not. Australian media are sour grapes. Do you have other news to publish instead of using the same old tricks to smear China or create controversial issues?

Good. Australian's are waking up.

i think china and australia need to go to couples therapy

Australians have less trust in our own regime it appears.... 😎

Top UN official seeks China visit to investigate human rights abuse allegations against Uighurs in XinjiangMichelle Bachelet is under growing pressure from some countries to secure unfettered access to Xinjiang, where activists say more than a million Uighurs and other Turkic Muslims have been mistreated or subject to forced labour. A bit laughable given China has power of veto over any resolution. Also a little laughable is human rights atrocity committed casually by Islamic regimes under the protection of religious freedoms all but ignored by the UN with the exception of some intermittent damming reports. And yet United Nations are still not allowed to visit West Papua for 60 years! WestPapuaGenocide FreeWestPapua United Nations are very selective in where they look for human rights abuses.
