A union leader says a mine collapse in Victoria that killed one worker and critically injured another “should have been avoided”. The two men were pinned by rocks when unsupported ground gave way 500m deep just before 5pm on Wednesday at the Ballarat Gold Mine in Mount Clear. They were about two hours away from the end of their shift, which had begun at 7am.

Rescue mission after Ballarat Gold Mine rockfall. One of the men, a 21-year-old from Ballarat, was airlifted to hospital and remains in a critical condition, while a 37-year-old man from Bruthen was killed and his body was recovered from the mine on Thursday morning. “This is absolutely devastating,” Australian Workers’ Union Victorian state secretary Ronnie Hayden said at a press conference on Thursday.
