A 59-year-old Australian man on holiday in Namibia has been killed by an elephant while camping near a river in the Kunene region.

An Australian tourist has been killed by an elephant while on holiday in Namibia.

A 59-year-old man was killed in the Huab river in the Kunene region where a group of tourists were camping on Thursday morning, local time. "This is a very unfortunate incident and highly regrettable," the country's Ministry of Environment and Tourism confirmed in a statement posted on social media. "It has thus far been established that the area in which the group of tourists were camping is not a designated camping site.""Among other things, we also want to establish if the tourists were guided by a tour guide.

"The Ministry wishes to reiterate our call to our very welcome tourists to always be cautious and adhere to the rules and regulations put in place for their safety."Finally, we wish to express our sincere condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the deceased."A drought across southern Africa has caused stress for much of the wildlife, including elephants, zebras and hippos.
