A worldwide study of more than half a million 15-year-olds shows Australian students lag 3.5 years behind their Chinese counterparts in maths.

A global study of more than half a million 15-year-olds has found Australian students lag 3.5 years behind their Chinese counterparts in maths — and their performance in all three major subjects is in long-term decline.

The 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment report, out today, found for the first time since the survey began some Australian states scored below the OECD average in maths literacy. As well as lagging well behind Chinese children in maths, the study also found Australian students had fallen more than a year behind their Singaporean counterparts in reading."We're not giving them the skills that they need in maths or in reading or in science," she said."That is a concern, particularly in a global economy where our kids will compete with kids all over the world.

The nation's capital was the best performer, with the ACT and Western Australia both beating the average.Overall, the report found Australian students had fallen behind by a full school year in maths, and almost a school year in reading and science.

GILLARDS EDUCATION REVOLUTION spent billions for what .... a destruction of education standards . More 💰pissed up against a wall by the socialists.

Education department riddled with socialist bureaucrats & pens pushers, left wing leaning teachers pushing their own socialist views on our children, instead of teaching kids to read, write & spell they want to teach 6 yr olds how to masturbate, deliberately dumbing our kids down

Never send your kids to an Australian public school. Never.

Kids don't need to know how to read and write or do maths. They only need to know that Western Civilization is evil, they need to apologize for being alive, Climate Change will eradicate them in 11 years and Indigenous Culture is simply wonderful and superior. auspol outsiders

What? Most parents I speak with tell me how smart their little ones are....

With the politicisation of the curriculum and all of the useless fluff in it is no surprise that some kids are falling behind in the STEM area. Back to basics is the answer, strip the curriculum right back to core cognitive skills and fundamental knowledge areas.

Public Education is not important enough to governments. Crowded curriculum, social issues, so many students with high needs in classrooms with little to no support. We could go on and on but definitely not teachers.

They know whats got to be done to bring education into the 21st century, no more excuses.

One may wish to argue that such a decline is not at all surprising when one also factors in how the unchallenged one dimensional neoliberal changes to education have teachers focusing more on their own futures rather than those of their students. auspol neoliberalism

Teachers are following the ABCs lead and just pushing hardcore socialist programs disguised as climate change.

Really, in a country led by a fundamentalist Christian who doesn't accept the science of climate change. Who would have thunk it?

Funny, in Qld AnnastaciaMP and jackietrad think the answer to our students being the worst in Australia and obviously lagging behind the world is to air conditioned the rooms first before doing anything else. Comfortable but dumb students that’s what we need.

If a statistic can't be fixed in 3yrs Australian politicians can ignore it. The problem is that when politicians ignored an issue for 10, 15, 20 yrs Australia ends up as the arse of Asia. auspol ausdef theblock

Absolutely disgraceful. Cut open plans, teachers as facilitators & team based projects. We need teacher-led teaching, single desks & focus on fact, reasoning, logic & debate- not indoctrination. Stop listening to intellects on how to teach. They’ve proven their (un)usefulness.

Great teachers we have !

Great. Now the Doomer generation actually has something to worry about. Their unemployablity.

Better throw more money at it

Aussie kids struggling with maths...they don’t understand how 1 plus 1 African equals so many Asians. It doesn’t equal Australians!

To busy protesting global warming and being taught there are more than 2 genders.

All part of the great LNP...no free thinkers allowed, just clones who swallow their utter bullshit.

Who cares about international ratings! Kids need to be prepared for building a healthy AUSTRALIAN society not some other country’s needs. We need innovators and our education system needs to work toward ppl’s giftings and strengths rather than cookie cutter mass indoctrination.

Perhaps they spend too much time protesting to understand the science.

Has the amount of time spent by teachers teaching maths, reading and science decreased over time?

They have enough time for ridiculous school strikes for climate though....

Perhaps the teachers show teach reading, writing and maths, rather than pushing their own political views just like the abc... Fair dinkum..

Oh

Why. And don’t you dare say they need more money and smaller classes. Look at China and Singapore. How are they so successful. My quess is the poor quality of Australian teachers and their union dominance.

Can we please scrutinise the testing itself? Not all of us agree that it is a valid and reliable measure.

Who cares when we have a budget surplus and a union busting bill 😂

I don’t want my kids or any Aussie kids attending a learning environment which focuses solely upon producing human robots. I want them to learn critical thinking skills and develop true intelligence. Stuff the international testing and benchmarking it’s BS

FGS - how do you measure critical thinking? I have taught international students - Asian students are good human computers but that’s about it. Rote learning rates highly in NAPLAN type tests and yes they do this in spades

What nonsense. I wonder how many pupils from the Xinjiang province took part in this survey? How many years are the ABC behind other publicly funded broadcasters around the world?

i feel sorry for them. school is so boring and you have to sit there all day. they should put it all online and open the schools 24/7 and let students come and go as they please. that will get results, and it will be better for the students.

Theres sure some dead beaters commenting in here.

Too busy teaching kids about fuckery gender shite auspol

That's sad to hear. We have a significant digital skills gap across Australia and the greater Asia-Pacific region. The appreciation for the relevance of maths and science must start at a young age.

I'm not surprised, too busy discussing 'Climate change' and playing with robots.

I have 3 comments - 1) that’s sad for all Austrians 2) sceince is hard
