Austal is close to securing a strategic beachhead in the Philippines with the purchase of a port that serves as a maritime gateway to the South China Sea.

In 2019, a pair of Chinese companies signalled interest in Subic Bay, but the Austal bid — which is backed by US interests — has long been considered the strongest contender.

"As Austal moves into Subic Bay it's not going to be there to promote the agenda of the Australian government, it's only going to be there to promote business and engineering interests and to run the port efficiently. In a statement, Austal declined to comment on the Subic Bay bid, but said it was "continually assessing opportunities to further expand its operations if they align with our growth strategy".Last week, Austal announced it had begun talks to sell its 40 per cent stake in a Chinese shipbuilding business set up five years ago, amid deteriorating relations between the two countries.

Taking back Port of Darwin on 'just terms' would be money 'well spent' | Sky News AustraliaAustralians would agree taking back the Port of Darwin from China on 'just terms' with 'just compensation' would be money well spent, according to Liberal Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells.\n\n'Well I think Australians would agree taking back the Port of Darwin on just terms and paying just compensation would be money well spent,' she said.\n\n'Now we don't know the terms of the lease because that's only within the purview of the Northern Territory government - but I believe under just terms that the Port should be taken back and I've advocated that.\n\n'In the recent hearing of the foreign relations legislation I actually put those questions to the Northern territory government and I asked whether just terms would be the value of the lease - which is 94 years - or other form of just compensation.' Senator_CFW Maybe the LNP should pay any compensation above the original price, I’m sure Australian would support that. Senator_CFW I can’t wait till we take the port of Shanghai and raise the Australian flag. Senator_CFW Get those dickhead Politicians that approved it and the PM at the time, Turnbull, to compensate them out of their own pockets, this deal should never have even been considered in the first place.

Scott Morrison promises progress on India repatriation flights but details remain scarcePrime Minister Scott Morrison insists progress is being made to restore repatriation flights from India as pressure mounts on the government to come up with a plan to return home stranded Australians. Stay Strong PM! You made the right decision to keep all in Australia safe. The cricketers & Aus in India need to wait whilst we get the quarantine facilities ready to cope with the deadly Indian variant of CoVid19. No point bringing them back to an unsafe situation Seems like quite a few 'Aussies' have gone overseas since the start of the pandemic and now claim to be stranded. Why were they allowed out in the first place?
