Queensland wildcard Olivia Gadecki has made a sensational start to her grand slam career, breezing past Russian qualifier Polina Kudermetova 7-5, 6-1 to be the Australian Open’s first local winner.

Joining Australian Olivia Gadecki in the second round will be the highly ranked Americans Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula.

Gadecki, 20, did not face a break point until she was a set and 4-0 up, possibly owing to her seeing the finish line - but she swatted away a forehand drive volley to emphatically save it and was soon one game from victory. The friends, both primary school teachers from Cambewarra on the NSW south coast, drove 800km to Melbourne with four boys aged from 12 to 16. Baxter said the drive was accomplished thanks to “a lot of electronics with headphones” and copious stops to feed the boys.Eddie Jim

But they felt the cost was worth it. “We live in regional NSW where there is not a Lune in sight,” Baxter said. Said Thomson: “You’ve to the to get the good stuff while you’re in the city.” Both players are in their first main draw match here at Melbourne Park. Gadecki made an appearance for Australia at the United Cup in Sydney earlier this month but lost to Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. She is the world No.199.Pegula and Gauff have breezed through their first sets against Cristian and Siniakova 6-0 and 6-1 respectively. The 28th seed Amanda Anisimova has lost the first set to Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk 6-3 in 27 minutes.
