Professor Turnell, 57, was working as an adviser to Aung San Suu Kyi before her government was toppled by the military in a coup in February. But in a development that has concerned Australian officials and Professor Turnell's supporters, no consular officials have been allowed to observe proceedings.

"We have registered our serious concerns with the Myanmar ambassador in Canberra, and senior representatives in Naypyidaw.

As it should be, Myanmar is their own country, when you go there it is on their terms, if you go there to influence their domain you are breaching terms of peace. This is something Australia only has itself to blame for, our rights end at the border, start acting like it.
