Five months into his tenure as 2022 Australian of the Year, Dylan Alcott says he is still "incredibly humbled" by the appointment, but also cannot wait to hand over the baton."And I cannot tell you how hard I'm going to work until January 25.The Paralympian says the journey has been "very busy and very full-on", and he still can't quite believe he's been named Australian of the Year.
But he has a message now to other young people with disabilities who may be feeling the same way he once did.Dylan Alcott says it is "up to all of us" to make society more inclusive. "What better way to be different than to have a disability, if you can embrace it … and be proud of the person that you are."It's up to all of us in society to create a space where they feel included.
"I just want to create a society and environment where that kid can not only survive but thrive … I think that's up to all of us to try to provide that."Alcott has been praised for breaking the glass ceiling for people with disabilities, but he says he has only gotten this far because of the advocates that came before him."Paralympians like Louise Sauvage, Kevin Coombs, Kurt Fearnley, advocates like Stella Young.
Legend this guy.
I had to help a fella put his hand back on the remote for his electric wheelchair today, he couldn't even speak & tell me if he was ok or not. Being disabled isn't the same for everyone. If only common sense was however it's not even common now, too much pc crap.
Stop it with this insensitive perpetuating nonsense that all disabled people should feel the same way, as he does.
Proud to use a vibrator on ya missus in public, what a wanker.
'What better way to be different than to have a disability, if you can...be proud of the person that you are.' I'm glad this works for you. But this is not a better way to be different for thousands eg my son, who has MECFS and would give anything to have his life back.
Pretty hard when the pension to help support them is a pittance. Not much of a future to look forward to. Can’t afford a home, can’t afford a car, can’t get a job. Not much room to dream for disabled young people. disabilitypension
I don’t need him to tell me that.
hit son bit
And love yourself DylanAlcott
