Australia will buy at least three American-manufactured nuclear submarines and contribute 'significant additional resources' to United States shipyards, with the Biden administration asking for $US4.6 billion from Congress to improve them.

abc.net.au/news/aukus-nuclear-submarine-deal-announced/102087614Australia’s nuclear submarine program will cost up to $368 billion over the next three decades, with confirmation that the federal government will buy at least three American-manufactured nuclear submarines and contribute "significant additional resources" to US shipyards. The AUKUS class submarines will be operated by both the UK and Australia, using American combat systems.

There will also be an option to purchase another two under the landmark AUKUS defence and security pact to be revealed in San Diego later this morning. That submarine — which will form the AUKUS class — would eventually be operated by both the UK and Australia, using American combat systems.WatchOne submarine will be built every two years from the early 2040s through to the late 2050s, with five SSN-AUKUS boats delivered to the Royal Australian Navy by the middle of the 2050s.

Someone with credibility tell us why this is money well spent - honestly why do we do this? We are not that vulnerable, and can hire assistance when China engages in war with us. Will any submarine stop a missile they send? Maybe one or two.

I wonder if they will be paying for the washing machine safety switch

How many diesel subs would that buy?

We are now totally supporting the USA economy.

mikeoniron I didn’t know Australia was THAT rich. $368 billion for 8 submarines , WOW

The US gov needs more money to pay their debts. So they found a fool AlboMP who will chip in. Bad luck, Australian taxpayers.

The money would be better spent buying subs (sandwiches) and feeding the poor

No referendum? Why not that's all our money and alot!

so we need submarines more than help for people with mental health issues and homeless people, even just one submarine less would probably fund those problems many times over

The real question is where is the sovereignty as we do not have a nuclear research capacity. We will keep depending

Money wasted that could have been given to the aboriginals

If the sub deal price is accurate and doesn't blow out (and pigs fly), it's over $1,200 per year for every person in Australia. Expensive. But I guess better than having the Chinese shooting missiles at us. auspol auspol2023

Fricken based

With Australia's affirmative action rules in the military, the women should be excited... Some great job opportunities for the right women, especially for those in STEM directly; not to mention non-direct jobs more broadly spread.

Over 20-30 years ffs at least be factual you ABC wankers.

By the time these submarines get delivered, the war with China will be well and truly over.

Stop all aboriginal spending for one month and they can throw in a couple more…..👍🏻

It’s about 75% of Australia annual revenue😬💰

People focus a lot on the price tag... $368B is a lot, but spread over 30y and considering that this is our life insurance, it can be justified, IMO. What I think is more dangerous is that it will be ready in the mid 2040s and AUS will start be independent in the 2060s 😱😱😱

None of this would have occurred had people known that nuclear technology is a fallacy. You have no one to blame but yourselves

Fix the entire rural hospital system instead...?

$368b spending in our education, healthcare, infrastructure and environment we will be the country everyone envying for next 50 years. Spending this amount on defence will destroy Australian’s future. Initially was $70b now $368b. We need referendum on this.

Do we need the approval of the Voice for this?

🤬

Albo could ask the population if he's doing the right thing. A second question on the upcoming referendum will do the trick

368 your kidding everything these politicians sign deals they at least double

Political elites taking our future from us. There go Homes, education, and healthcare for every Australian.

abcadelaide Greg Sheridan: “…Australia has a Saudi economy (iron ore and coal exports) and Swiss living standards”. We can’t even manufacture a bicycle, despite one million sold annually. Skills will be lost by the time we try to build one.

We need housing. This won’t stop China. They will just take out our power grid - no weapons needed.

L O L

I can't wait to see how someone misappropriate those funds

Yes but who's going to pay for it? That's right they'll just cut public services even further. Paying taxes has now become pure extortion by a government that serves the US military industrial cartel.

No chance you can double that figure

I am afraid, a misinterpretation of the threat environment... 20th Century thinking which erroneously under-estimates the killing capacity of the Hyperthreat of climate & eco crisis... There are other ways, time for bold imagining... PLAN_E

The only way to defend the country is to arm the people. If we want to be prepared for the next century we need to start now. Australians need to wake up and start taking responsibility for ourselves.

So that means $600 billion by 2030

There should be a referendum when this much money is at stake. it's time to ask Australians if we want our taxes spent on nuclear subs. $368 billion is just the start, it's absolutely going to be more than that. Australia will be impoverished by this lunacy.

Ffs a war on Cancer would be nice 🌚petty amounts of money are allocated for the overall health and and research of promising trials ect .Australian Taxpayers have to fund charities to fund research ect !I never voted to spend billions on war toys.Albo is becoming a tyrant!

The price you have to pay to enforce your racist Anglophile ideals and the fee that must be paid to join the axis of evil. RIP 🇦🇺.

Don't worry. Captain Albo's at the helm.

Defence is the most important insurance policy for the nation. This will cost $368 Billion over 30 years. The NDIS is rising and in comparison will cost $1,350 Billion over the same period. AUKUS will be 27% of the rising cost of only one welfare cost the NDIS.

If you had know Labor was going to squander 400 billion on this shit would you have voted for them. Painfully the LNP would have spent more!

Investors and politicians are going to make so much money on their military stocks from this all paid for by the losers that pay tax. They truly are brainwashed suckers and are happy to go broke to make us rich. Suckers. 😂😂💰💰💰

368billion now triple that by the time they are completed. US cant cost anything accurately.

Cooling trade relations with China will cover the cost.

How about a proper Value Engineering Study that could save billions of dollars!

Why costing so much ?.. 1 us nuke sub is around $6billion.. So why $350 billion ..i dont get it..One indian sub = $500 million !!!

They just keep burning taxpayers money for nothing 🔥

Hopefully, they will stop countries from starting a war with us, and we never need to use them in anger. 👍

AWFUL AUKUS! CHINA LAUGHING! SUBMARINES? HIGH Maintenance. HIGH Skill levels.NOT ready to the mid 30s & 40s! We're an ISLAND Nation in SOUTHERN Hemisphere! MISSILES MISSILES MISSILES!!! Completed in FEW years & DESTROY INVADERS Long BEFORE reaching our shores! SUBMARINES a JOKE!

Like a drunken sailor.

Wont take many missiles to end this suicide mission.

Disgusting 😩

Why doesn’t he make lithium battery or wind powered submarines if it’s good enough to supposedly power our grid?

And deliver 30 years later, 😂

Why is it costing us half the entire US military budget to buy 3 second hand submarines ? The actual price tag per submarine is only $2 billion. Something is extremely wrong here

All that money for 3 second hand submarines in 20 years! What a joke

Costing this much to what, sit on dry land for years and become surplus. What a complete waste of money.

The last extinguishing of Australian sovereignty after the 1975 MI6 & CIA Coup deposing Whitlam Govt. because they were to nationalize 51% of resources. UK & US loot our resources.. now we pay $500Billion for fing subs to defend the Zero Tax paying looters. AUKUS fraud.

The subs could be built in the USA for a quarter of the price. Wasting $200billion to shore up a handful of south Australian seats makes sports rorts look like a good deal.

So Australia is going to spend 16% of her GDP in buying 3 second hand US nuclear submarines ! 🤡 This is going to be fun! Each boat costing $122 billion , meanwhile we spent less than 40 billion on education budget every year! Some one please explain the logic

Absolutely ridiculous when Ukraine got a trillion dollars for free. Either China are a thread or they are not.

We need to drop the subsidies on renewables now & build SMR nuclear plants immediately. Chris Bowen is the roadblock. EnergyCrisis

Australia's homeless

think we will move to NZ as too risky for my family to stay in Aus now while be safe move there

Such an extravagant commitment to submarines that have never been pivotal in any war. Missile production yes, because they win wars. Production of missiles are where our money should be invested. john

Maybe Former PM Malcolm Turnbull knew better than most give him credit for, when the ORIGINAL conventional powered sub contract was signed.

Joe Hockey said this morning that we need these subs to protect our gas export terminals - I’m assuming this ridiculous cost is going to be picked up by taxing the gas industry AlboMP - it’s already gone up $100bil in one announcement

The gleam in Mr Dutton's eyes on yesterday's 7.30 minded me of L.Cohen's haunting lines: ' Like any dealer he was watching for the card that is so high and wild he'll never need to deal another. ' --The Stranger Song (1967)-- $50 BILLION A BOAT!! And an empty nukes cupboard!

People are homeless and can’t afford basic food yet we can go into debt for 100 years for something that will be obsolete by the time we get them.

What everyone should be asking. Albo happy to purchase nuclear powered tin cans that go to great depths of the oceans. BUT thinks nuclear powered energy grid is simply not an option?

Auspol2023 Australia would be better placed investing the sub investment on developing our own hitech offensive/defensive capabilities that make owning subs irrelevant for any nation, nuke powered or not. Small hypersonic weapons, stealth drones and laser weaponry industries...

In other words we have lots of money to take care of people but we are choosing not to.

better than wasting money on housing and hospitals

did you know that you could have broadcast RobodebtRC ?

NO NO NO. No Aus $ billions to US shipyards to assist them to get ready to build Aus owned subs. AlboMP promised 20,000 jobs, presumably in Aus not the USA. A serious rethink required here as we sign up for the $368 billion sub investment.

China would have supplied them for half the price.

Australia have purchased barnicle collection pods these wont get fired up in time of war China Russia Iran North Korea will NUKE us all . Our goverment is not smart we always had the backing of yanks and poms no need to purchase subs. Imagine billions spent on poverty

By the time this lot finishes the contracts that estimate will exceed 1 trillion

The cost has nearly doubled in 12 hours. Imagine my shock. Just wait until the union bastardry and Labor corruption sets it. $600b will be closer to the mark.

I do not want to hear another word on how we can’t afford to raise the rate, fund the NDIS etc with the government throwing money around like a drunken submariner.

God bless ScottMorrisonMP for bringing the AUKUS agreement to fruition. It’s time to project Anglo power across this planet one more.

In 2 minds IMHO $$$ seem necessary for defence & strengthening ties to AUKUS - we don’t stand a chance alone but….

$386 Billion!!!! Picking fights is so good for business.

$400mils blunder that would bankrupt us like Argentine Our debt is $1tril Now we r splashing for gargantuan monsters They would be a target

Whereabouts will the waste products of these submarines be stored?

…and pretty soon you’re talking real money

386 billion? As if there won't be the time and cost blowout to take it to almost a billion. Bleeding ourselves dry like this, we'll be destroyed as a country without needing to be attacked by an enemy. Actually, we'll be sucked dry by 'friends'

Necessary ? or white fear a coloured powerful nation has evolved ? Roman democracy evolved to tribal kingships to religious fanaticism to autocrats to Colonialism to true democracy but now cold capitalism disguised as democracy when policies are similar regardless of who we vote?

Good thing we didn't need that money for anything else (picture unrelated).

You can bet your bottom dollar the Americans will make huge profits with this. 100% money driven. Virginia-class subs are top notch though..albeit 2nd hand. The replacement Columbia-class subs now in development? What do they have to offer.

Bahahahaha can't make this shit up.

AUKUS subs deal to change Australia’s defence outlook for ‘generations to come’Sky News Washington Correspondent Annelise Nielsen says it’s hard to emphasise how extraordinary the AUKUS nuclear submarines deal is regarding Australia’s defence history. Ms Nielson said the deal is set to change the nation’s defence outlook for “generations to come”. “That hasn’t come without some consequences, especially from China, we have seen an increase in rhetoric from the Chinese government signalling out the US this week as escalate tensions in the region,” she said. “They are taking note of the fact that we are teaming up with the United Kingdom and the United States.”
