Australian Commonwealth Games marathon gold medallist Jess Stenson has thrown her hat into the ring for Olympic selection with a fourth-placed finish at the Daegu marathon in South Korea. The 36-year-old marathon veteran took more than 60 seconds off her personal best time of 2:25.15, stopping the clock at 2:23.59, just seven months after giving birth to her second child, Ellie. Stenson’s time is well under the the Olympic standard of 2:26.
” With the qualification period set to end on April 30, Diver, Gregson and Weightman are in the box seats to be on the plane to Paris. But with the qualification times so close in such a deep field of runners, Athletics Australia selectors will consider more than just times when they pick the team. Past performances at major races will also be a significant factor, giving Stenson real hope that she could still be called upon.
