Birdon, based in Port Macquarie on NSW’s Mid-North Coast, grew out of an old dredging business. It will supply the coast guard with 20-metre long ‘cutters’, used to patrol coastal and inland waterways.

has won a $US1.2 billion contract to build 27 vessels for the US Coast Guard, beating five other comapnies to the prize.

Admiral Linda Fagan of the US Coast Guard said the contract award of 16 river buoy tenders and 11 inland construction tenders ensured the Coast Guard would continue to meet its “vital missions”. “Birdon, and our partners Bollinger and Incat Crowther, look forward to continuing our successful relationship with the Coast Guard for years to come,” he said.

It said outdated technology and vessel designs had raised crew safety concerns, maintenance cost increases, and non-compliance with environmental regulations.
