Australian beekeepers lodge evidence to dispute New Zealand's attempt to trademark the term manuka, arguing the word has been used in Australia since the 1840s.

Australian beekeepers are calling for an end to the ongoing trademark dispute with New Zealand producers over manuka honey that continues to threaten their livelihood.

"We're not a big association and we are defending beekeepers' livelihoods," AMHA chair Paul Callander said. "It certainly isn't a level playing field with an association fighting against the New Zealand Government," Mr Callander said.Michael Howes produces manuka honey through his family-owned company based on the NSW North Coast. The Manuka Honey Appellation Society Incorporated argues that mānuka is a Marori word, unique to New Zealand, and want it trademarked similar to France successfully trademarking champagne.

"It's a word that has been used a lot to represent the plant species in Australia and New Zealand," Mr Howes said.
