Australian authorities on high alert as deadly monkeypox spreads in UK and Europe

Australian health authorities are keeping close watch after a rare and deadly strain of monkeypox was detected in theBritish health authorities say they have identified four “rare and unusual” cases of the disease among men who appear to have been infected in London and had no history of travel to theIn a statement on Monday, the UK’s Health Security Agency said an investigation had begun into how the men became infected and whether they had any links to each other.

“The evidence suggests that there may be transmission of the monkeypox virus in the community, spread by close contact,” said Dr Susan Hopkins, the Chief Medical Adviser for the UK’s Health Security Agency.Meanwhile, Portuguese authorities say they have also identified five cases of the rare monkeypox infection and Spain’s health services are testing 23 potential cases after the United Kingdom put Europe on alert for the virus.

The disease does not typically spread easily between people, but British health officials say it’s possible if there has been extremely close contact with an infected person.
