Opinion: Australia’s golden ticket out of COVID-19 may well be international students but to capitalise, premiers need to drop their airport arrival caps – and fast

Australia’s golden ticket out of COVID-19 may well be international students. But to capitalise, premiers need to drop their airport arrival caps – and fast.

Limiting arrivals to 500 a week is the most egregious distortion of the science so far. All states but Victoria proved hotel quarantine is safe. But we carry on with near-empty hotels and their staff languishing on JobKeeper when they should be able to embrace their "new normal" thanks to a restarting of international travel.

Of course, Australia can rise to this challenge. Brisbane alone has 5 million hotel bed nights annually and the Gold Coast half that number again. Currently Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk quarantines just 50 people a day while the remainder of Queensland’s accommodation sector is on its knees, wallowing in JobKeeper payments.

The news media reports state border overreaction but seems to miss the bigger picture: the billion-dollar losses we face if we can’t sort out international travel.

How about we let our citizens back in the country first and let us travel interstate.

Say it louder for the people in the back! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 IStillCallAustraliaHome

Finally some common sense!Caps need to lifted/increased + MEL airport should be back on track. I can’t understand why Adelaide for example is only working with 2 hotels. I am pretty sure Hotels/Restaurants would love to participate on the quarantine program.Win-win for everybody

Golden ticket on international students with state borders lockdown? What am I missing?

Or Andrew, your government could find the University sector properly. There’s a thought.

Aren't these Federal Government caps?

Golden ticket for who Don’t speak for me please.

Why would international students want to come to a vassal state of America that views them as cash cows and think of their homeland as the enemy that needs to be erradicated

How about filling universities with Aussies!

Morrison has been treating international students like starving peons. Why would they come here?

If you think that our leaky hotel quarantine system can accommodate tens of thousands of overseas students without restarting the virus it is because you can only see the cash cows and their money💰their lovely money 💰, and you would do anything to have their money💰. auspol

NO!!

Ugh. Seriously?

If our economy is dependent on international students we are doomed

I suggest that you allow those stranded Austrailans to get back home before lining your pockets with studet fees. Letting foreign nationals back into the country before Australians will be a statement of your complete lack of leadeship ScottMorrisonMP removethecap KKeneally

Tasmania not 'ceding' border reopening control, Premier saysTasmania's Premier doubles down on plans to keep the state's borders closed until at least December, saying he has agreed to an aspiration to open by Christmas but will be guided by public health considerations. What's their bush fire plan? Tasmania has the best forests in Australia. Climate change says it'll burn there next. Well done Tasmania for rejecting the Prime Minister's reckless and face-saving attempt to be a dictator. The states have got this, no need for more failure from the feds. No one asked him to do that. Puerile ABC spin as usual.

Gladys Berejiklian implores Queensland to ease coronavirus border closure as NSW records eight new infectionsNSW has recorded eight new COVID-19 cases while Premier Gladys Berejiklian has again called for her Queensland counterpart to ease border restrictions. Cooperation is easy Gladys. Go for elimination and when you and Victoria have achieved it you can rejoin the rest of Australia! Then why isn't Gladdie cooperating with Qld & Vic, instead of siding with the evil Morrison against them? She's the only Premier to put her politics above the citizens of her State. Get off the ScuMoBus. You not what Gladys; just mind your own state business. If the borders aren't open, you can't blame everyone else.

Australia's premiers are 'strangling the nation' | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Chris Kenny has labelled Australia’s state leaders – save for New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian – as “political cowards” as they continue to stand by their hard borders. \n\n“They’re blocking borders around the country, and locking down hard in Victoria, despite the pain and collateral damage they're creating,” he said. \n\n“This is beyond a joke. \n\n“The nation united in shutting down, the states are all on board for accepting federal funds for JobKeeper and the like, but there is no consensus on opening up and learning to live with the virus. \n\n“This is what has happened to our premiers, they are single minded, obsessed, and they’re strangling the nation”. \n\nMr Kenny likened the nation’s journey out of the coronavirus pandemic to a “perilous” bus trip which attempted to “keep the states on board, following the same difficult route, where mistakes could have disastrous consequences”. \n\n“The Australian coronavirus bus is in for a rocky ride, not everybody is on board, they all want to go in different direction, and the driver's not in total control.” \n\nImage: News Corp Australia GladysB GladysB Do you ever get embarrassed Kenny pretending to be an independent journalist, calling out the ABC for bias, and being the worst type of duffle coat wearing, paid up Tory wind up toy?
