She also commended the findings of a Qatari investigation that showed"illegal actions" had occurred when the female passengers on a Sydney-bound flight were subjected to the examinations on 2 October."It is an important step that these offences have been referred to the Public Prosecution Office," Senator Payne said in a statement on Friday night.Earlier a statement from Qatar's Government Communication Office said"standard procedures were violated".
Senator Payne said she welcomed the apology and Qatar's acknowledgement of the"offensive mistreatment of female passengers" at the airport. "Australian passengers will be reassured that Qatar has established a specialised task force to review procedures and protocols to ensure there is never a repeat of this incident," she said.
"The statement of the Government of Qatar is consistent with our expectations for contrition, accountability and determination to avoid any repeat of this disturbing episode." The Qatari apology comes after the Australian government expressed outrage and union workers threatened not to service Qatar Airways aircraft in Sydney over the incident.
Airline staff demanding full pelvic exams on female passengers is disgustingly invasive. I hope these women sue. How is the newborn baby doing? Well I hope.
“So that’s what it’s like for a young woman going to a music festival in NSW.”
And those atrocious polices Strip searching girls as young as ten.... oh wait.... that was the Australian police
And the penalties for the people who committed these heinous acts ..... will be? Zilch.
The illegal violation of women at Doha International Airport requires far more than just an apology!
She knew about it all along & did nothing!?I hope the female passenger who reported it ‘ll ask 4 class action & get compensated for this inhuman abuse& invasion on personal liberty!
Omg 13 women were sexually assaulted and the apology is welcome 🙄
So if Qatar intends to prosecute the people responsible for those searches, what will happen here in Australia to police officers who have acted similarly at concerts, etc?
Stop calling it “forced internal exam” etc, it was sexual assault plain and simple. An apology is the very very least they can do to fix this, if it ever can be fixed for those women
Seems that they haven’t changed their attitude to the treatment of women in the last four years
Marie’s welcomed an apology. We don’t. Close their embassy in Canberra.
But have they said it never happen again? This airport on my places never to transit through now.
As a woman there would be nothing more frightening than being dragged off a plane by a muslim brute and forced to open your legs. That country is a disgrace and I will never fly qatarairways EVER! auspol
This exposes Qatar as a social medieval backwater that should be avoided at all costs. The sooner we get direct flights to Europe via Perth the better.
Payne is gormless. MarisePayne
Some poor sods in Qatar will be scapegoated over this. The mother is probably a powerless migrant worker working in slavelike conditions.
Has she phoned anyone yet?
What were the consequences for any woman who refused to be subjected to this assault? I am outraged that any woman, let alone an Australian citizen, would be forced to undergo such a process!😡😡😡
'Australian passengers will be reassured that Qatar has established a specialised task force to review procedures and protocols' FFS, this statement is the reason radicalism exists. F*cking governments and their diplomacy thinking we're all good now.
It seems Australia is backing down. The officers at the airport were following order from high up. The notion of referring them to the public prosecution office is a joke.
September 2017, RAAF, along with British and Danish planes carried out a prolonged attack on an established SAA position in Deir ez Zour Syria. Over 100 SAA soldiers were killed, many more wounded. Isis overran the position. Payne was defence minister NEVER apologised.
They will NEVER receive an 'apology', merely a 'justification'.
geoffrey_payne I would have thought this outrage would be sheeted home to whoever owns the airport in Doha, rather than Qatar. Maybe they're one and the same.
geoffrey_payne I expect that the women will get more than an apology
has anyone done a DNA test on the baby girl to have a guestimate at her nationality?
'Sorry about finger-popping ya hoes' ::in v formal high-Arabic::
