With Steve Smith showing the patience of a chess master and pace duo Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood signs of greatness, the Australians were too strong on English soil, writes Ian Chappell

Nevertheless Smith’s runs would be wasted if Australia wasn’t able to claim the required 20 wickets at a reasonable cost. That’s where Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, the relentless attack leaders, excel.

In addition to their undoubted skill they also have the steely determination to produce something extra when the team needs a lift. The pair bookended the demolition of England’s resistance in the fourth innings with Cummins commencing the slide with two first-over ambushes and Hazlewood ending proceedings with yet another well directed missile.Whatever theories were concocted to omit Hazlewood from the first Test they should be destroyed without trace.

He has in common with Allan Border the fact that he was the only captaincy option at a critical time and the fact that he hasn’t failed has saved Australian cricket from being embarrassed.

QuinnRod Ah, chess. The (ridiculous) comparison for everything.

Two poor batting teams. Two good bowling teams. One amazing player.

Praise a cheater thats the way

Hard to watch at times when batsmen from both teams (except Smithy) played like park cricketers. Hoping it all comes together at The Oval but not holding my breath.

Has he been named the Captain yet as was predicted?

The devastating moment that the war against ivory began to unravelAustralia has finally banned its domestic ivory trade but is it enough? Fucking humans and their incessant need to collect things from animals because they say it’s worth money. It’s disgusting and proof that humans are nothing but disgusting parasites who just take and do damage when they try to fix what they did. It needs to stop at the coalface. Botswana has army patrols inside Chobe...and the directive if they find poachers is “shoot to kill”..perhaps that’s the strategy needed in Africa... We hear a lot about actions against poachers but nothing about addressing the root cause and that is the demand for ivory from Asia.
