Australia should “be watching closely what other countries are doing” as China waits to see where its discarded rocket booster will land, according to US Centre non-resident Fellow James Brown.

“It’s rocket science but it’s not exact, it’s a pretty broad part of the world where this thing could land and I think it goes to the point that we need to be watching closely what other countries are doing,” he told Sky News.

Mr Brown said China had been “doing some really interesting things in space” in terms of both security and civilian space operations and they were contributing to the space junk problem. “We rely so much on this infrastructure in space for communications and things we do every day, we want to make sure we’re protecting it and Australia’s been pretty good in being active in international conversation on how to make sure space is protected.
