OPINION: It is in Australia’s diplomatic and strategic interests to keep as many outside players engaged in the region as possible.

Part of it is simple solidarity with Ukrainians under unprovoked assault. “The people of Ukraine are doing the democratic world an enormous service ... it’s important that democratic nations stand with Ukraine”, was how the prime minister put it.

Australia has long had a binary debate about whether it should seek security in the region, or from it. There are ANZUS and AUKUS, but there is also the Quad, with Asian giants India and Japan. China does not want this,in the Pacific, when it would prefer to deal with weaker individuals. But it is essentially what everybody is doing.

Mr Putin is now weaponising the Black Sea, blockading Ukrainian grain and fertiliser exports that feed 400 million in the global south, driving international anxiety on food supplies that he uses as leverage. That’s not a precedent that should stand.

Would you pay an extra 20 cents for your potatoes? Farmers say they're at risk if shoppers don't chip inAustralia's potato farmers say a few cents at the check-out could be the difference between some staying in the game or walking away for good. I would pay more but for a farmer to get 20 cents the Supermarkets would hike the price up by $3 to make their profit Supermarkets will happily add 20c per kilo...but won't pass that onto farmers (see milk). Potato farmers some of our nations great heroes. Would absolutely pay it if there was a transparent way to validate they got it, not the supermarkets
