It’s likely many low and middle-income countries will have to wait until as late as 2024 to be able to vaccinate the majority of their population against COVID-19, after wealthy nations rushed to stockpile available doses through bilateral deals.
“The picture is actually really bleak right now,” Andrea Taylor, the assistant director at the Duke Global Health Innovation Centre, told SBS News. “It looks very dire for all low-income countries, and most lower-middle-income countries as well. These countries just do not have enough vaccine to cover their populations.”AAP
WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom on Monday described the possibility of poor countries missing out on the vaccine as a “catastrophic moral failure” with the promise of equitable access “at serious risk”. Established during the early stages of the pandemic, the initiative relies on the support of wealthy countries to fund advance market purchases of vaccines, which will then be distributed fairly throughout the globe. The coalition is also supporting the research, development and manufacturing of a wide range of vaccine candidates. All participating countries, regardless of wealth, will have fair and equal access to vaccines once they are developed.
“Even as they speak the language of equitable access, some countries and companies continue to prioritise bilateral deals, going around COVAX, driving up prices,” he said.
Anything Tedros has to say about fairness or moral failings is acrid smoke. Didn't Pakistan and some those nations that might 'miss out' make vaccine exclusive diplomacy deals with China over say, attempting to secure from Indian vaccine mass-production plants?
Why such a negative spin in the headline? Can we sometimes celebrate a win?Africa is coping far better with the pandemic than everyone expected, maybe because in many countries over 40% of the population are under 15 years old.
These vaccines are expensive which is why they wont work unless governments make them free.
