John Coates' successor has been chosen, and he brings plenty of Olympics experience.

He trumped former Olympic swimmer Mark Stockwell with 26 votes.

Having already committed 21 years to the organisation, Chesterman was first elected to the AOC executive in 2001, before becoming vice president in 2016. He was made an AOC life member in 2018.

Coates reiterated the AOC's strong support for sanctions and bans imposed by the Australian Government and the IOC's lead in urging all international sports federations to relocate or cancel sports events planned for Russia and Belarus, as well as measures to prevent athletes and sports officials from Russia and Belarus competing under their countries names.

"We are part of an international sporting movement raising its powerful voice. We will continue to use it until this crisis is over," he said. For a daily dose of the best of the breaking news and exclusive content from Wide World of Sports, subscribe to our newsletter by

Ukrainian athletes fleeing Russia's invasion will have their humanitarian visas supported by the AOCThe Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) will support Ukrainian athletes seeking to resettle in Australia on humanitarian grounds amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine, outgoing AOC President John Coates says. Fuck Ukraine When there was brutal civil war in Sudan, nobody in Australia fast-tracked visas to Sudanese civilians. The staggering hypocrisy is that we've been involved in wars that have caused far more civilian deaths and created more refugees than Russia has done in Ukraine. But why are Russian still being allowed to compete world wide. I am proud of of English tennis. Olympic sport is JUST FOR THE MONEY- The Olympic SPIRIT is long dead.
