Australia's international border restrictions have been extended until February 2022 amid ongoing concerns over the COVID-19 Omicron variant.

The extension of the human biosecurity emergency period – which has been in place since March 2020 – allows the Commonwealth government to keep “important” COVID suppression measures in place.

“These arrangements have been a significant contributing factor in Australia’s success in avoiding the catastrophic effects of COVID-19 seen in many other countries,” Mr Hunt said in a statement on Friday. “The human biosecurity emergency period ensures the appropriate legislative powers are available to the Australian government as further information is gained and understood about Omicron, as well as to protect vulnerable communities in Australia,” he said.

Why some Australian residents have considered abandoning the country during COVIDPermanent residents and visa holders say border closures and separation from family overseas have impacted their mental health and wellbeing, leaving them questioning whether to remain in Australia. Yer, cuz we have gone full tyrannical. Aussies will survive wether yes foreigners come and go , it exposes the hypocrisy of them coming here to use us when times are tough run off as seen in many cases whinging as usual, citizenship is given to easy and they take advantage, , only Aussies born here be allowed back Immigrants in the 1970's basically thought of it as a one way trip. They were all in on their Australian dream. The current lot treat Australia as a second passport & are about as committed to Oz as the ABC is to publishing politically balanced commentary
