Dr Priya Nair, director of the intensive care unit at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, has detailed the experience faced by more than 140 people with COVID-19 in ICU across NSW at the moment.Sydney’s Dr Priya Nair.Dr Nair said patients know they are in ICU because their disease is getting worse and are very aware they could end up on a ventilator.
“There’s all the monitoring gear, there’s other sick patients around, there’s a lot of sensory stimulus going on around them,” Dr Nair said.She said patients are away from their families and are often worried about their relatives who may also be positive for COVID-19. Australians are being promised a shift within months to easier travel rules that allow home quarantine for those who cross state borders or return to the country as Prime Minister Scott Morrison steps up the case for relaxing lockdowns despite concerns from state leaders.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison wants to see states and territories use home quarantine to allow international travel once vaccination targets are met.Business leaders backed the national plan to ease restrictions in a significant collective call from companies that employ about 1 million workers, warning of a “mental health emergency” from extended lockdowns.
