Australia’s pushback against China is not aggressive nor retaliatory, it is “subtle” and in line with normal international expectations.

Sky News host Chris Smith said the federal government clearly decided to “ramp up its pushback” against China as it launches a WTO action against Beijing for its tariffs on Australian barley.

Beijing targeted Australian barley producers earlier on in 2020 by applying an 80 per cent tariff on the product. Mr Smith said the WTO action is a sign that Australia “won’t be bullied” and is prepared to go to the international umpire to intervene. “More than that, it highlights to other potential trading partners with China, that they can't keep their promises.”
