RMIT Professor Joe Siracusa says Australia has “revolutionised its position on China” as it moves to reject Beijing’s maritime claims in the South China Sea.

Australia has claimed China’s actions, which include constructing artificial islands and military bases in the strategic waterway, were inconsistent with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and therefore invalid. Mr Siracusa told Sky News the nation had in the past “taken a position but not a side”.

“This time Australia has taken a position and a side, it’s taken the side of the United States,” he said. “So China sees Australia march right behind the US in lock step. “Someone from China, in the foreign ministry, said yesterday there’s very little Australia can do to repair the damage so I think that’s absolutely correct.” Image: AP

Well done!! China is the biggest thug on this planet

only because the US asked and we followed. sigh...

China is a hegemonic power. If any one in the this world is trying to insert nuances in China's behaviour, they are cretins and intellectually corrupt. In fact Australia should be a lot more forceful and demands that Europe locks step behind it. ScottMorrisonMP PeterDutton_MP

I would suggest that the Aussies need to take their own direction . If they are with the US then China seriously needs to withdraw investment from Australia. Allow the Americans to take China's position as it's trade partner

South China Sea belongs to China,Don't be an American lackey

China would ring fence the South Pacific with naval bases and crush free peoples with debt slavery. Had to be.

Aust govt has demonstrated we are ruled by Washington... We support and defend US economic incompetence, it's incompetent handling of covid-19, US provocation in the south China Sea. And in return risk sabotaging Aust economy? US global corporatism would make Mussolini proud...

They have an international law on their side as it was ruled in favor of the Philippines by The Hague. They’re simply acknowledging and upholding that ruling (PCA case number 2013–19).

Hell ya! What’s next for the Chinese, the Great Barrief Reef? F them, as simple as that. The CCP can go and F themselves

Fvck China

Actually, all Australia has done is call China out for its illegal activities.
