Australia is expected to back a watered down resolution at the United Nations General Assembly expressing an aspiration for Palestinian membership. The government has spent a week batting away questions about its position on whether to support a bid for Palestinian membership of the General Assembly. A new draft has been circulated, but it could still be subject to further amendments before the vote in the early hours of tomorrow morning Australian time.

Government sources have confirmed to SBS the motion now expresses an aspiration for membership and extends the rights to participate as an observer, but would deny voting rights. The resolution further supports Israel’s right to peaceful existence and reiterates “unwavering support” for a two state solution. Australia has the option to reject the resolution or support it, or a further option is to abstain.
