From tomorrow Melburnians will be able to gather for picnics, but a major condition to the new freedom has been exposed and it's sure to leave many residents less than impressed.
As part of the eased restrictions that will kick in at 11.59pm tonight, fully vaccinated residents will be able to gather outdoors in groups of five adults from two households for recreation.But residents planning on having a boozy picnic with mates, or even just a glass of wine, are going to be very disappointed.whether the ban on removing masks to consume alcohol outdoors would remain in place, Premier Daniel Andrews said he wasn't sure but would seek clarification.
"I can understand that people will be very keen to get an answer on that, and I will get you one around the consumption of alcohol and the removal of a mask during the said outdoor activities we’ve just announced, whether they be picnics or otherwise," he said during Thursday's press conference. Later that afternoon, his officer confirmed to the publication that the ban, which was introduced in August following an illegal pub crawl, would remain.
However, there are concerns many will choose to flout the restrictions around the new freedoms, after Mr Andrew said that police would not be patrolling "every park" to check that everyone was obeying the rules.
