'Let’s not pretend': Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton has hit out at thousands of lockdown protesters who descended on the streets of Melbourne on Saturday | coronavirus COVID19 protestlockdown melbourneprotest

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton has hit out at thousands of lockdown protesters who descended on the streets of Melbourne on Saturday.

Mr Sutton said that long COVID - and the debilitating fatigue, ongoing shortness of breath, neurological and psychiatric symptoms that came with it - didn’t make people free. “We can all argue the merits or otherwise of various approaches to managing transmission, but let’s not pretend that ‘marching for freedom’ will actually deliver the precious freedom that we all need and desire.”NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says she is disgusted by the behaviour of thousands of anti-lockdown protesters who marched through Sydney’s CBD on Saturday.

“This type of activity during lockdown will not be tolerated and the full force of the law will be brought against anyone who engages in this type of illegal activity.” “No one should be allowed to swarm, assault, threaten or throw items at the police who are out there enforcing public health orders aimed at saving lives. Those illegal protesters deserve to feel the full brunt of the law.”

Police Minister David Elliott said a strike force of 22 detectives had been set up to track down more than 3500 “very selfish boofheads” who breached coronavirus restrictions by marching from Victoria Park to Town Hall.Deputy Commissioner Mal Lanyon said police officers had been assaulted during the protests, with some suffering minor injuries.“This is not a time for people to be out of their homes. This was a disgraceful action today.

Lockup the protesters!

What infuriates me is the ppl whose actions might be the reason that lockdowns gets extended. They then jump up and down oblivious of their own contribution to that outcome. Easier to blame others like VictorianCHO DanielAndrewsMP et al.

Did he criticise BLM protests?

No choice for VictorianCHO and DanielAndrewsMP but to extend lockdown due to a potential super spreader event. Can't fix stupid. Can't fix selfish.

We should not be in lockdown.. vaccination rollout should have occurred in time for winter with the most vulnerable vaccinated first. AND still they aren’t.. JohnRuddick2
