Diseases like lung cancer and asbestosis could rise if homeowners are not careful doing works on properties.

"When construction companies, builders, and mum-and-dad renovators demolish old structures, if an asbestos survey isn't undertaken, there is a risk that the demolition may impact directly on unidentified asbestos-containing materials," he said.  "TAFEs may do a one-hour course on asbestos at the start of an apprenticeship. That's the next generation.

The pressure disturbed the asbestos - which became hazardous and airborne - and spread to the house, garden, a neighbour's home and parked cars on the street.  One in three homes in Australia has asbestos, with it typically found in electrical backing, wet areas, flooring, a heater or fireplace, cement, hot water units or insulation.
