Canada has welcomed more than 300,000 refugees under the community sponsorship scheme since the 1970s, in addition to those arriving under government-funded programs.
The review was based off feedback from local stakeholders, international counterparts in Canada, as well as the United Kingdom and Ireland, who have adopted similar models, and the UNHCR.In 2017, the government introduced a"community support program" designed to allow individuals, businesses or community groups to provide financial support to resettle refugees with employment prospects in Australia.
"Concerns have been expressed that the cost of the program – and, in particular, the visa application charges – are too high," the Shergold report found. "The government's current government program is definitely the most ineffective model in the world of sponsoring refugees," he told SBS News. He pointed to the Canadian sponsorship model as a program that more effectively manages the cost burden and support requirements of community groups to assist in the intake of refugees.
Release the poor people that have been on Christmas Island for 5 year! They’ve done nothing wrong and the town where they were living excepts them
Great idea
My wife and I have shared our home with skilled migrants, newly arrived refugees, former refugees and single mothers for the last 13 yrs. Four couples have now bought their own home, every person has been in full time work, one child is doing 4th yr law, another 1st yr pharmacy.
My Palestinian Lebanese born family are refugees and the UNRWA refuses to help I would love to bring my family to Australia to live with me !! Please make this happen AlboMP
'...considering parts...' Yeah 🤔😉
But potatah says tha boats will start again!!
Not really as most Aussies are racist because of immigrants extremely bad tack record.
And what issues, if any, does Canada have as a result of this system?
With the massive Covid restrictions on migration to Australia, one would think the bloodymindedness of the government restrictions on the Biloela family could be undone!! ScottMorrisonMP
Just knock on the front door.
When you read what they’re offering it’s a typical lnpcorpsed underfunded substandard program that will invariably profit parasitic mates.
Does this include refugees legally seeking asylum? Ie. the Biloela asylum seekers languish g on Christmas Island.
Additional refugee places does mean additional significant costs to governments regardless of what sponsors provide. There is no reason this can't be budgeted for.
Tell that to the citizens of Biloela.
Private sponsorship should have always been the way. Private everything is always better.
Oh yeah, what an inspired idea. What could possibly go wrong? 🙄
Hmmmm like tbe Biloela family who the entire community wants to support? That would ne a great start! HomeToBilo
The LNP are totally bereft of ideas! Now they’ve started using long established policy from Labor to look like they actually have a heart. Psst let me tell you a secret. They don’t! Can we have that election now!
MsRonnyB In May 2017 a group of Labor, Liberal and National MPs moved a parliamentary motion for the introduction of an expanded and improved community sponsorship scheme in Australia, spurring civil society groups to work together to realise this goal.
That was suggested years ago and LNP ignored it.
Then they will just release the India covid strain to cull Australia from overcrowding
Would this be able to bring back the Biloela family?
Anything to shift responsibility and costs.
All also need to co sider canadian style of welcoming international students
Ok there you go Wokesters.. Put your money where your mouth is.. Greens supporters should be opening up there doors You would think 🤔 auspol
If Twiggy was actually a philanthropist, sponsorship and resettlement without strings attached would seem a fairly productive use of funds. In contrast to his self funded, self interested think tank & lobbying organisations established under the facade being of charitable orgs.
