Australia and Brazil have stepped up the sugar trade war by challenging India’s industry subsidies with the World Trade Organisation overnight.

World sugar prices hit a 10-year low last year after the Indian sugar cane industry received about $1 billion of new subsidies.

Trade Minister Simon Birmingham and Agricultural Minister David Littleproud say the inconsistent subsidies are hurting Australian farmers, with the industry set to see $360 million in losses.
