Politicians from across Australia’s parliament have called for sanctions to once again be considered against military leaders behind the 'violent repression of protests' in Myanmar.

The Morrison government is facing pressure to take a tougher stance against the military leaders behind Myanmar's coup.

“Australia has a clear national interest in the cessation of violence in Myanmar [and] the restoration of civilian [and] democratic rule." Australia has existing sanctions against five military figures who have been on the list since 2018 but has not expanded this to include coup leader General Min Aung Hlaing. The government has argued applying further sanctions would risk restricting Australia’s influence over Myanmar’s military.

Nationals 'out of touch' after debating against proposed childcare changes | Sky News AustraliaShadow Education Minister Tanya Plibersek says arguments made by the National Party against proposed legislation to increase childcare subsidies show how “out of touch” the party is. \n\nOn Tuesday some Nationals senators argued stay-at-home mothers should be receiving more support, with one MP claiming women are using childcare to outsource parenting. \n\nMs Plibersek said the comments are “a bit rich coming from people who spend half the year in Canberra”, saying Labor's policies provide the most benefit for families.\n\n“Labor’s childcare policy helps all families earning an income of under $530,000,' she told Sky News.\n\n“When you compare it to the Liberal’s new childcare policy, 750,000 more families benefit under Labor’s policy than under Scott Morrison’s.'\n\nShe said she thinks the Nationals’ decision was all about Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce’s “personal ambition”.\n\n“The problem with the Nats overall is that back in their electorates they say they’re for regional Australia but then they come to Canberra and then … they vote for all the things that hurt regional communities.”\n
