It’s been described as a “critical” situation as these Aussie towns could run out of water as early as November.

The projections from NSW’s river operator and bulk water supplier WaterNSW show without significant rain the first towns to lose water supply will be Dubbo, Cobar, Nyngan and Narromine with the Macquarie River forecast to run dry by November.

Australia’s longest river - the Murray - has been severely affected with 901GL of water entering the system in the past 12 months compared to its annual average of 5000GL. The WaterNSW data shows the lakes received 2100GL of water in 2016/17 followed by just 52GL of water in 2017/18.Under the worst-case scenario, the Lachlan River, which runs through the state’s central west, is projected to run dry by March 2020 leaving the towns of Forbes, Cowra and Parkes without water supply.

A group of rivers which straddle the NSW and Queensland border and supply water to the towns of Boggabilla, Ashford and Goondiwindi, received just 17GL of inflows in the past year compared to an annual average of 1000GL.Source:Supplied

What, no pipeline from the top end to the eastern plains? Plenty of pipes being smoked at Canberra on $200K pa.

Easy to say to build dams, harder to fill them. What will we put in them? Some of these towns haven't seen rain in well over 6 months, a year or more. Without rain, they won't fill & stay that way. To the dams that we can fill, no rain to refresh them, how long can they sustain?

sarahinthesen8 will fix it.

Mean while Adani is being granted an unlimited supply. Wars have bern caused by less.

OMG

Australia needs water, not Mass Migration. Be waterwise

Dams are a band aid fix and have a negative flow on effect into nature, are we really willing to sacrifice more forestry by drying it out to burn and destroying it to build these damns for human existence. Be cheaper to relocate towns in the long run.

What's the government doing to fix it? Building more & more rail lines & roads & reaping the dollars from all those 'water licences' as if buying extra water can somehow replace what's used. GladysB & ScottMorrisonMP have to get priorities straight or we're fk'd. builddams

Build dams or stop immigration
