"I thought he would be sponsored for sure, I didn't think anything of it. But then the visa was declined. They said that we weren't a genuine couple because we didn't have a joint bank account and we didn't have enough support from family and friends," Ms Burgess said.
"In my husband's culture, Islam, it's fairly common to marry quite quickly. But in Australia they don't really recognise that," she said. "While I was heavily pregnant we had to go to meetings with immigration officials. They were checking to make sure I hadn't had a stillbirth, because if that had happened he would have been sent back. That is how harsh it was."
He then reported himself to immigration and was placed in a detention centre for seven weeks before being deported back to Malaysia. Ms Burgess said she made the heart-wrenching decision to move back to Australia for the safety of her unborn child. With Mr Wangkimshen's two-year visa ban having just ended, he is now planning to either reapply for a partner visa, or parent visa. However, the couple will need to pay another $6500 application fee and the waiting times are also lengthy.
