An initiative to lure seabirds to a coastal island by playing bird recordings is achieving results, including luring a bird species to the island that was previously thought to be extinct in Australia.

On a ruggedly beautiful Australian offshore island, recordings of certain petrel calls echo through the air each night in a bid to lure the seabirds into specially installed nest boxes to breed.

Mick Roderick, with Birdlife Australia and the Hunter Bird Observers Club, said it was the latest in a series of conservation efforts on the island, after rabbit and rat infestations were tackled by the National Parks and Wildlife Service . "We are trying to give our seabirds a bit of a leg up by installing nest boxes on some of our islands, now that they are pest free," he said.
