Monash University has been accused of an “outrageous attack on free speech” after students say they were warned that chanting pro-Palestine slogans could get them expelled.

Pro- Palestine protesters have accused Monash University of an “attack on free speech”, saying nine of them were threatened with disciplinary action if they were caught chanting “from the river to the sea, Palestine shall be free”.

Monash student and encampment organiser Josiah Downey said pro-Palestine protesters had “set up a non-violent, peaceful demonstration” and the university had “chosen to threaten us with suspension or expulsion for exercising our free speech and our democratic rights to protest on this campus.” “It's an absolute disgrace Monash University has responded to a peaceful encampment… what's happened here is an outrageous attack on students' freedom of speech.

The claim that “from the river to the sea” is an “anti-racist slogan” conflicts with the position of Jewish groups. “If they cared a jot for peace and the future of the Palestinians they would join us in calling for the end of Hamas and the resumption of the peace process.”
