Several houses have been destroyed and tens of thousands are without power as deadly tornadoes sweep through Georgia and Alabama.

In Selma on Thursday, the city council used lights from cell phones as they held a meeting on the footpath to declare a state of emergency.About 40 homes were destroyed or seriously damaged by a tornado that cut a 32-kilometre path across two rural communities, according to Ernie Baggett, the county's emergency management director.At least 12 people were taken to hospital and crews were cutting through downed trees on Thursday night to look for people who may need help.

Officials in Griffin, south of Atlanta, told local news outlets multiple people had been trapped inside an apartment complex after trees fell on it.
