A pageant, sheepdog trials and running races featured in the 151st Rheola carnival in central Victoria on Monday.

The aromas of eucalyptus and sizzling sausages filled the air and the vibe was “turn off your phone and relax” at the agreeably old-fashioned 151st annual Rheola charity carnival on Monday.

In and around the town oval, there were pony showjumping, a spin-the-wheel stall and a yard where kelpies rounded up sheep., but Rheola has its own historic Gift foot race, over 120 metres of which was won this year by 13-year-old talent Charlie Sullivan of Maryborough, whose prize was a trophy and $300.

Mason said on Monday it was worth being driven 220 kilometres from his Ringwood North home by his daughter Sarah-Jo Mason. “I identify with the locals, I know them,” he said. “I feel relaxed, at home.”Later, during the Miss Rheola Carnival Girl pageant, teenagers and young women vied for the main sash, and there were also kids’ tiny tot and junior pageants.

Rheola, a farming district 60 kilometres west of Bendigo, had a population of just 52 at the last census, but thousands flocked here when gold was discovered in the late 1850s.– was dug up at nearby Moliagul in 1869. Then in 1980, the second-biggest nugget, Hand of Faith, was also found locally, by a prospector using a metal detector.
